Trouble in Kenya
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

There has been much trouble in Kenya in the past five months. After the presidential elections, there was a violence between the two political groups and the violence became ethnically charged. The two sides have reached a deal where President Mwai Kibaki will stay as current president and Raila Odinga will become the prime minister.
Members of the tribe of the President began attacking other minority tribes and there was much violence. More than one thousand people were killed during the turmoil and 350,000 Kenyans were displaced. Even after the political deal has been reached, many people are still afraid to go back to their homes because of the violence that has happened.
About half of the displaced Kenyans live in displaced persons camps set up by the Red Cross. They are being encouraged-almost forced it seems-to leave these camps even though they dont feel safe going back to their homes or dont have a place to go home to.

Darfur has more deaths than recorded
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

The past few years, there has been a humanitarian crisis in Darfur. African tribespeople began to complain about descrimination from the government, and the government responded with a militia that killed many tribespeople. Human rights workers have been in Darfur, trying to help the situation but in the last two hears it has not necesarily better, and some say it has actually gotten worse. Counts from international organizations said that the deaths in Darfur counted up to two hundred thousand, but recent counts put that figure up to as many as three hundred thousand. In the last few days the food supplies have been cut in half and the tribespeople are still forced everyday to leave their homes and flee to a safer place. Lately there has been increased support by the Sudanese government, but aid workers still dont have enough access to be able to get into the country and help the people who are suffering.
The situation in Sudan and Darfur is one that makes me really sad. Although people are doing whatever they can to help the problem, none of the fixes have worked out for very long and I am beginning to lose hope that there will not ever be a peaceful solution to this crisis.

obama
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

So apparently Bill Richardson is going to endorse Barack Obama. This is important because he is the only hispanic governor in America. It will probably affect a lot of votes, especially hispanic voters. Bill Richardson says that he still likes the Clintons but thinks that it is time for Clinton to back down so that the democrats can rally together to fight against McCain. Many people also think that Richarsons endorsement will help influence some super delegates opinions, which is very important for Obama.

Belgium repays holocaust victims
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

The last current event that I did was about Belgium. The Belgian government has decided to repay all holocaust survivors and victim's families for the material items that they lost during the holocaust. They are spending over 30 million dollars.
I think this is a pretty amazing thing that Belgium is doing. It is a good way to let the families know that the government feels sorry for what they have done. Way to go Belgium!
